Ministry in hot water over Sh4.6bn spent on London mission

The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee on Thursday has asked the ministry of Foreign Affairs, East Africa, Regional and International Cooperation to explain how the Tanzania High Commission in London spent Sh4.6 billion when it was only allocated Sh2.0 billion.
The committee was reviewing the ministry’s audited report for the year 2013/2014 and asked the ministry to submit a detailed report within four days.

“We want the ministry to submit the report to the parliamentary clerk next week so that we understand what is really going on,” said the committee’s chairman Mr Hilary Aeshi.
At the same meeting the committee directed the ministry to ensure that all retired officers still attached to missions abroad return home.

It emerged that there are various embassy personnel who, although they have reached the age of retirement are still being paid by the government.
The officials claim they are waiting for their offspring to complete the studies they have already embarked on outside the country.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Aziz Mlima said the retired embassy officials cite family related matters as reasons for extending their stay abroad.
He told the committee, “We will submit the report in time to the clerk in line with your instructions.”
