27 accidents reported on DART lanes in barely a week

Dar es Salaam. Twenty seven accidents occurred since Dar Rapid Transit (DART) buses started to operate about a week ago, Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda said yesterday.
Mr Makonda, who was speaking during the launching of a 90-Day Cleanliness campaign, however, said the accidents did not cause any death. He said most of the accidents involved the DART buses and motorcycles which encroached on lanes reserved for the commuter buses.

The RC said the city council would enact bylaws to provide for stern measures against motorists and pedestrians using the DART lanes, in a bid to to prevent more accidents. “It’s shocking, but come Monday, we will ensure the lanes are respected. No one will be allowed to use them, including petty traders,” Mr Makonda retorted.

He said President John Magufuli would officially launch the DART project later this month. Meanwhile, Mr Makonda wondered that Sh6 billion though was spent on garbage collection annually, the country’s largest commercial city was still dirty.
He blamed contractors tasked with collecting the garbage for issuing false reports, while they were incapable of the task. (Saumu Mwalimu)
